Viewing Chinese, Japanese, and Korean (CJK) in Chinook

 

To view most diacritics and the display of East Asian languages in the vernacular, you must configure your browser to enable unicode:

 

Microsoft Internet Explorer version 6.0 or later. This is the preferred browser. To configure:

 

1. Go to "View"

2. Select "Encoding"

3. Choose "Unicode (UTF-8)"

 

Netscape Version 4.x does not work.

 

Netscape Version 6.x works sporadically.

 

Inputting Chinese or Japanese for Searching on Chinook

 

To search and display records in the Chinese or Japanese languages on Chginook, you must configure your computer to input those languages.

 

  1. Go to "Control Panel" and select "Regional and Language Options."

  2. Select "Languages."

  3. Make sure "Install files of East Asian languages" under "Supplemental language support" has been selected (or grayed).

  4. Click on "Details" and select "Settings" under "Text Services and Input Languages."

  5. Click "Add" under "Installed services" to open the "Add Input language" box.

  • For Input language, select "Chinese (PRC)"

  • For Keyboard layout/IME, select "Chinese(Simplified)-Microsoft Pinyin IME 3.0)

  • Click on "Apply" and "OK"

  • Click on "Properties" and "OK" to exit.

Traditional Chinese:

  • For Input language, select "Chinese (Taiwan)"

  • For Keyboard layout/IME, select "Microsoft new phonetic 2002a"

  • Click on "Apply" and "OK"

  • Under the "Installed Services" in the "Settings" box, select "Microsoft new phonetic 2002a" for Keyboard

  • Click on "Properties"

  • For Input method setup, select "Legacy IME."

  • Click on "Keyboard Mapping" box and select "HanYu Pinyin"

  • Click on "Apply and "OK"

  • For Input method setup, select "Legacy IME"

  • Click on the "Keyboard Mapping"

Japanese:

  • For Input language, select "Japanese"

  • For Keyboard layout/IME, select "Microsoft IME standard 2002 ver.8.1"

  • Click on "Apply" and "OK"

  • Click on "Properties" and "OK" to retain the default setting

  • Click on "Apply and "OK" to exit.

You are now ready to both display and input Chinese and/or Japanes on Chinook. Click on the Language bar button Language Bar Button on the desktop to select the language you desire.
