What is Find it at CU?
Find it at CU is comprised of two different features. The first is a tool that you may encounter in many of the University Libraries’ online databases, which are listed on the Find Articles & More page.  Find it at CU links you from citations in databases to the full text of the items/articles in other databases.  When you click on a Find it at CU link, a new browser window will open, displaying a list of categories and options within each category.  These categories include full text, the University Libraries’ Chinook Catalog and interlibrary loan services.

The second feature, called Find it at CU Article Finder, is a form that allows you to enter specific information about an article to locate the full text of that article online, if available to the University Libraries community. With Article Finder, you do not need to select a database to search in for the full text -- once you enter your citation information, Article Finder will search across all our full-text electronic resources for you. While similar to the Find it at CU tool mentioned above that is in place in many of our subscribed databases, Find it at CU Article Finder is different in that you will not need to start in a database to utilize this feature. Instead, the form is linked from the Find Articles & More page in Chinook.  It can also be accessed directly at http://libraries.colorado.edu/openurlform?genre=article.

What types of items are available through Find it at CU?
Currently, Find it at CU offers links to databases and publishers’ websites, as well as links to the Chinook library catalog and  ILLiad and ArticleReach.  More resources will be available through Find it at CU in the coming months.

How do I use Find it at CU to get to full text?
When you click the Find it at CU link from a citation in a database, a new browser window will open, displaying a list of options for obtaining the desired item.

How much citation information do I need to supply when using Find it at CU Article Finder?

Each full-text vendor requires different data elements, so there is unfortunately no easy answer to this question. But, in general, the more citation information you can provide the better the chances are that the article will be found. You must always include an ISSN, therefore we provide a link to an ISSN lookup site. After ISSN, the most important elements to include are year of publication, the author’s last name, article title, volume number, and start page.

What if I don’t know the ISSN when using Find it at CU Article Finder?
It is very important to include the ISSN when you fill out the Article Finder form.  If you do not know the ISSN of your journal, click the "ISSN Lookup" button and type in your journal title. The ISSN Lookup will try to find an ISSN for your journal title. If it finds just one, type the data into the ISSN form field. If it finds more than one, it will display a list of journal titles and their ISSN numbers, allowing you to select the appropriate number.

Is all of the libraries’ full text available through Find it at CU?
No. Some full text sources have not been set up to work with Find it at CU yet. We are setting up all of the full text sources that work with Find it at CU, but some resources do not yet work with this type of linking and require work on the part of the database vendor or publisher.  These resources are still accessible via the E-Journal Finder and the Chinook library catalog.  A list of sources that are currently set up to work with Find it at CU is below.

Why are there multiple links to full text?
In some cases, we get full text for a journal from more than one provider, so if that is the case, you will see multiple links. If one of the provider web sites happens to be temporarily unavailable, you can access the full text from another. We are also offering links from your article to Google Scholar and often to our catalog or ILL/ArticleReach in order to provide you with as many resources as possible.

When I click on a link to go to the full text, I receive an error message or am prompted to pay for the article.  What should I do?
Sometimes you may encounter technical difficulties on the database vendor’s or publisher's website, changes to the libraries’ subscription, or broken links.  clicking on the “Link Above Didn’t Work Correctly? Report It” link or by submitting an Ask Us form, so we can investigate the problem.  In the meantime, if other links to full text are shown in the Find it at CU list of options, you can try accessing the item that way.  You can also try searching the Chinook library catalog.

Is Find it at CU available from off-campus?
Yes. You can use Find it at CU from any computer with an Internet connection. However, the use of many of the University Libraries’ online resources is limited to CU-Boulder faculty, staff, and students only.  Before accessing these resources, you must follow the off-campus guidelines for accessing online resources.
