From the Archives: Robert Godfrey

Robert Godfrey was a mountain climber, photographer, film maker, teacher, and writer. Born in Yorkshire, England, he came to the U.S. in 1968 and joined the staff of Outward Bound Mountain School in Colorado, while pursuing an M.A. in Physical Education at Colorado State University and a PhD in Education at the University of Northern Colorado in 1972. He served as an adjunct professor at the University of Colorado in the School of Education’s Experiential Education Program from 1973 to 1975, while continuing his work for the Colorado Outward Bound Program. He began film making in 1975, winning several awards for Free Climb and Sherpa, until his death in 1988. His collection contains papers, correspondence, films, drafts, course materials, publications and photographs on mountaineering, environmentalism and local political issues.
