Open Access Artistic Interpretations Call for Proposals
To recognize the upcoming International Open Access Week (Oct. 21, 2019 - Oct. 25, 2019), the University Libraries will commission six artistic installations that will be displayed in locations across campus.
CU Boulder faculty, staff, and students are invited to submit proposals for the creation of an engaging artistic and/or expressive interpretation of one of several themes related to Open Access (OA).
The Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC) defines OA as “the free, immediate, online availability of scholarly literature coupled with the rights to use this literature fully in the digital environment.”
The costs of subscription access to scholarly research have skyrocketed, leaving many institutions of higher learning no choice but to reduce or cut access. OA creates a new framework that supports the goal of equitable access to information across the world by reducing restrictions on use and encouraging innovation through greater visibility and more collaborative scholarship.
Participants’ works will be displayed publicly in selected locations across campus for the duration of OA Week. Proposed installations may take a variety of forms, such as sculpture, data visualization, 2D art, mobiles, interactive, and more!
“The goal of this project is to improve outreach for and engagement with Open Access Week and issues related to Open Access,” Scholarly Communication Librarian Melissa Cantrell said.
