University Libraries to host event in honor of Matthew Fox, founder of Creation Spirituality movement
The University Libraries are hosting a special event celebrating Matthew Fox, founder of the Creation Spirituality movement, and the recent donation of his papers to the University Libraries’ Rare and Distinctive Collections.
This celebration will take place on September 21, 2023 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Center for British & Irish Studies, on the 5th floor of Norlin Library with an option to attend virtually. Refreshments will be served. Please RSVP to attend in-person or virtually.
In keeping with the message of the Creation Spirituality movement, which emphasizes community, justice, eco-justice, gender balance and deep ecumenism, the event will feature a panel discussion along with musical interludes and prayers and songs representing different religious traditions. Fox will be in attendance and speaking at the ceremony.
The work of Fox, who used raves as masses and officiated at the wedding and funeral of the Grateful Dead’s Jerry Garcia, and his donation to the CU Boulder Libraries was recently profiled in Westword.
The collection is an important addition to the Libraries. Fox’s work constitutes a counter narrative to an established patriarchal religion that signifies trends in Catholic mysticism, deep ecumenism, and pre-modern ritual and has much in common with the Jewish Renewal movement.
“We are very excited to welcome Matthew to the Libraries and to honor him at this event,” said Kate Tallman, interim director of Rare & Distinctive Collections team. “This panel will be a true reflection of Matthew’s work and interests in social justice, eco-justice, creation spirituality and music. We invite the community to join us in celebration and to take advantage of this incredible collection of papers housed in the Rare and Distinctive Collections at CU Boulder.”
