University Libraries connect students with election information

Ahead of the November election, CU Boulder students turned to University Libraries for help understanding ballot measures and navigating election information. Librarians distributed 400 Colorado ballot information guides and answered dozens of questions, helping students access reliable information and research the issues on their ballots.

The ballot information guides known as Blue Books, produced by the Colorado General Assembly’s Legislative Council, provide summaries and fiscal information about statewide ballot measures. Although they are mailed to Colorado voters, students may not receive a copy, particularly if they are first-time voters or their copy is sent to another address.

“Colorado has a strong tradition of allowing ballot issues to be initiated by the public. This makes being an informed voter even more important,” said Government Information Librarian Allan Van Hoye. “Blue Books are an easy way to begin learning about ballot issues.”

This year, the Libraries distributed all 400 Blue Books it ordered. Students also sought out the Libraries after hearing about the service from others, bringing questions about ballot measures and the voting process. Librarians answered dozens of questions and connected students with additional resources for researching issues on their ballots.

“There is a lot of information about ballot measures,” Van Hoye  said. “Librarians can help you navigate these sources and help you research issues that matter to you.”
