5 tips for overcoming library anxiety

Navigating a large academic library for the first time can be an intimidating experience—we know. There’s even an official term for it called library anxiety. So what can you do about it? We’ve compiled 5 tips on how to make your visit to the libraries a success.

1. Ease in to it and visit during less busy times

If you are overwhelmed by busy spaces, the library tends to have fewer visitors on Fridays and Saturdays or in the evenings compared to the other days of the week. Visiting during these times can be a lot less overwhelming and allows you to explore the library at your own pace. Visit our hours page to plan a good time to visit and browse our maps to understand where things are located in library spaces.

2. Bring a friend

Do you have a friend that’s used the library before or perhaps one that is just as confused as you are? Bring them along! Having an emotional support friend can make the experience a lot less scary and even fun. And if you are both new: Getting lost in the stacks searching for a book is a top 10 bonding experience—speaking from experience.

3. Ask for help

No, you are not bothering us! We want to help you. Each library on campus has a service desk (or in the case of Norlin, multiple) where librarians and staff are available to answer any questions you may have—whether they are directional, technical, or about using the library. You can also ask us via phone, text, email or through our chat service. The only stupid question is the one you don’t ask.

4. Its okay to be a beginner

College is full of new experiences and using the library is one of them. Nobody who uses the library for the first time is an expert, and even seasoned faculty often consult with librarians and staff on how best to use all of our resources and services. Building knowledge and comfort takes time. Librarians are available to assist with this process. Embrace the new.

5. Know that you belong here

The Libraries are more than a place for studying or storing collections—it's a community where everyone, whoever they are, are welcome. It's also a safe place to ask questions and consider new ideas. Before you step in those doors, know that the Libraries are your place to explore.
