“Braiding Sweetgrass” Author Robin Wall Kimmerer to speak Dec. 1 in Boulder Theater.

Robin Wall Kimmerer, a scientist, member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation and author of “Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants” will speak in the Boulder Theater on Dec. 1. Doors open at 10:30 a.m. and the event begins at 11 a.m. 

A complimentary lunch catered by Tocabe: An American Indian Eatery will be served to everyone that pre-registers for the event.

The free event is part of the Buffs One Read, a campus-wide program produced by University Libraries and Student Affairs that builds community through the shared reading of one book. It is open to CU Boulder students, graduate students, staff, faculty, and alumni. A limited number of seats are available to community members. Advance registration is required.

“Braiding Sweetgrass” is the selected title for the Buffs One Read 2022 program. The book weaves scientific and indigenous knowledge to make the case that living on the earth is a reciprocal relationship in which other beings such as asters, turtles and sweetgrass are our companions, teachers and fellow travelers. 

This year’s Buff One Read selection is part of a campus theme for 2022 of environmental justice and climate change. The event is also a lead up to the Right Here, Right Now Global Summit at CU Boulder Dec. 1 - 4. Kimmerer is a panelist at the summit.

Free copies of “Braiding Sweetgrass” are still available for first year students and can be picked up at the Technology Department of the campus bookstore. The rest of the CU Boulder community may borrow a physical copy, ebook or audiobook through the University Libraries.

The Boulder Theater is located off campus in downtown, 2032 14th Street, Boulder, CO 80302.  

Faculty who wish to bring their classes to the event should instruct their students to register for the event.
