At the culminating event of this year’s Buffs One Read, Zamora will engage in conversation, answer questions, give participants the opportunity to gain insights about his experiences, and speak on the themes of Solito.

The memoir was selected due to its alignment with this year’s theme: Courage, both in his journey and writing a book that shares these vulnerable moments. In the book, he exhibits astounding courage in making the 3,000 mile journey to be reunited with his parents. Solito provides an immediate and intimate account not only of a treacherous and near-impossible journey, but also of the miraculous kindness and love delivered at the most unexpected moments.

The talk will take place in the Center for Academic Success and Engagement (CASE) Auditorium.

Zamora is the winner of a 2024 Whiting Fellowship and the 2022 LA Times-Christopher Isherwood Prize. He holds fellowships from CantoMundo, Colgate University (Olive B. O'Connor), MacDowell, Macondo, the National Endowment for the Arts, Poetry Foundation (Ruth Lilly), Stanford University (Stegner), and Yaddo. He is the recipient of a 2018-2019 Radcliffe Fellowship at Harvard University, a 2017 Lannan Literary Fellowship, the 2017 Narrative Prize, and the 2016 Barnes & Noble Writer for Writers Award for his work in the Undocupoets Campaign.

Buffs One Read is a campus reading program sponsored by the University Libraries that is now in its fourth year. It is specifically aimed at first-year and transfer students to help them make connections during their first semester on campus, but it is open to the entire campus community and we encourage everyone to participate.

This event is sponsored by the University Libraries and the Renée Crown Wellness Institute.
