University Libraries migrating to new eBook system. Here’s what to know
To ensure uninterrupted access, faculty and instructors should review their library eBook links after June 15, 2026, when the University Libraries completes a major eBook platform migration. Libraries staff will update catalog and Course Reserve links automatically, but verifying that links in syllabi, Canvas courses and other materials are still functional will help prevent any disruptions.
What’s happening
Starting June 1, the University of Colorado System Libraries will migrate more than 30,000 eBooks from ProQuest Ebook Central to the EBSCOhost platform, consolidating titles into a single, shared collection across the CU campuses.
These updates are expected to take approximately 3–5 business days to complete and there may be temporary disruptions during the migration period. Migrated titles will maintain the same number of user licenses.
Why eBooks are migrating
This platform transition is driven by changes in the vendor landscape. In February 2025, Clarivate (which owns ProQuest) announced a shift in its content access strategy. Beginning in June 2026, Clarivate/ProQuest will discontinue sales of physical books and perpetual eBook licenses, moving instead to subscription-only offerings. Additionally, the option to purchase Ebook Central titles through the online book purchasing platform, GOBI, will be eliminated.
In response, the University Libraries have spent the past year transitioning the majority of book purchasing from Clarivate to EBSCO and migrating perpetually owned eBooks to EBSCOhost is the final phase of the transition.
What else is new: eBook reader platforms
On ProQuest Ebook Central, Adobe Digital Editions has been replaced with the Ebook Central Reader App. On EBSCOhost, Adobe Digital Editions has been replaced by EBSCO’s new digital rights management solution, Readium LCP DRM and Thorium Reader. Users should experience no access disruptions, but will have a slightly different experience.
The Ebook Central Reader App is a new, dedicated mobile and desktop app designed for reading downloaded ebooks from the Ebook Central platform. The app supports EPUB and PDF formats, allows users to manage their loans and devices, and is available on Windows, macOS, iOS and Android.
Thorium Reader is a free and open-source app that can be downloaded to view PDFs, EPUBs, and other DRM-free or DRM-protected content from various platforms.
