Libraries News for the Division of Natural Sciences - Spring 2025

The Gemmill Engineering, Math & Physics Library is closed for renovation during the 2024-25 academic school year. Print collections can be accessed through hold pick up at our other library locations or delivered to your campus mailbox. We have extended the hours at the Earth Sciences and Map Library.

Instructors from across campus have incorporated the Earth Sciences and Map Library’s art and map exhibit, Topophilia, into their coursework and faculty from all disciplines are invited to use it to support their teaching.

You’ll find chapter summaries, discussion questions, activities, related resources and recommended excerpts of Solito: A Memoir to integrate in your course.

The Buffs One Read Contest deadline is Jan. 24, 2025. Students are invited to reflect on their relationship with courage and to submit creative expressions inspired by Solito: A Memoir for a chance to win $500 and meet the author at the author event in March.

Javier Zamora, award-winning poet and activist, will join the campus for a conversation about his book, Solito: A Memoir, as the culminating event of this year's Buffs One Read.

Find a new recipe, read product reviews and check out books or magazines for recreational reading.

• NYTimes Cooking: New York Times Cooking is a cooking guide and diverse recipe collection that helps home cooks discover, save and organize recipes.
• Consumer Reports: Looking for unbiased product reviews? Consumer Reports offers independent product testing and consumer-oriented research.
• Children & Young Adult Collection: The collection includes major award-winning titles including books with racial and ethnic diversity, diverse gender and sexuality, disabilities or exceptionalities, science and math books.
• Popular Reading Collection: Need a break from scholarly reading? Our Popular Reading Collection is entirely composed of fun and interesting reads that don't require a highlighter or note taking.
• EBooks and Audiobooks on OverDrive: OverDrive has a variety of popular reading titles available through your browser or Libby app.
• New Yorker Archive: Full scans of the entire New Yorker collection back to the beginning including the most recent issue.

Subject librarians work with the Division of Natural Sciences to build collections to support your programs and they are experts on information sources and services in their subject areas. Contact your subject librarian to:

• Suggest a library purchase to add titles not already held by the University Libraries
• Request a Library Research Seminar to schedule a class visit
• Discuss strategies to integrate information literacy into your courses
• Book a consultation to learn the most useful library tools, techniques and databases for your research

We are excited to offer five research fellowships to support scholars who wish to use archives, rare books, maps, and government documents from our Rare and Distinctive Collections (RaD). Submit your applications by Sunday, March 2, 2025.

The Open Educator Award recognizes CU educators who demonstrate exemplary use of open educational resources (OER) in their classrooms or teaching practice. Nominations, including self nominations, will be accepted until midnight on Feb. 12, 2025.
