Libraries Exhibition Policy

Purpose

This policy defines the nature of the CU Libraries exhibitions and the procedures governing these exhibitions in all physical, hybrid and virtual library locations. Exhibitions and displays are a public reflection of the University and Libraries vision, mission and values, and are primarily intended to offer viewers engaging learning experiences. This policy is designed to support and enhance learning and research at the University of Colorado Boulder.

Scope

Our rotating roster of exhibitions emphasizes Libraries and University collections to enhance the intellectual and cultural life of our community. Our exhibitions connect collections and services to curriculum, faculty and student research to support and enhance the teaching and research mission of the university. This policy covers all exhibitions and displays, including those produced in-house and exhibitions in collaboration with external partners.

Definition

An exhibition is time bound and installed in a display case, on walls, or published on a digital exhibition platform(s).

Vision

Our vision for exhibitions is to:

  • Emphasize, connect, and inform viewers about our collections, services and mission.
  • Fulfill specific learning objectives that enhance the intellectual life of students, faculty, staff and visitors.
  • Create inspiring physical spaces and a sense of belonging and inclusion for the community through a showcase of diversity and accessibility.
  • Develop and enhance opportunities to collaborate with campus groups and the community and invite new audiences into library spaces.
  • Reflect, support and connect to campus research and curricula.
  • Strategically align ourselves with campus initiatives and priorities
  • Establish the Libraries as a premier cultural institution on campus.

Sponsorship

External exhibitions must have a sponsor from the University Libraries. A library sponsor may be any University Libraries staff, faculty member or group in the Libraries interested in working with the coordinator of the exhibit and collaborating with them on the learning outcomes of the exhibit. The role of the sponsor is to ensure that the exhibit aligns with the Libraries mission and values as well as connects to Libraries resources and/or services.

If no one in the Libraries is available to sponsor the exhibition, then the exhibition may not proceed.

Timeline

The installation date should be in accordance with the exhibits schedule. Some exhibit spaces (specific walls or cases) may be scheduled up to two years in advance.
