Documenting Community, 2020 Digital Archive

Documenting Community, 2020 Digital Archive invited CU students, as student archivists, to participate virtually in the creation of a new archival collection housed in the CU Boulder Libraries Rare and Distinctive Collections department. We hoped to capture, in real time and virtually, the ways that COVID-19 affected our personal and family lives, our university community, and our public communities more broadly. We accepted electronic submissions from three groups of CU students in their roles as student archivists:

  • Student employees from Rare and Distinctive Collections (RaD)

  • Student employees from the University Libraries

  • Students of CU educators with whom we collaborated on this project through our instruction program

Submissions consisted primarily of photographs, video and oral interviews, recorded reflections, and creative projects (for example, commonplace books, artists' books, graphic novels, and photography books), all of which were created or collected virtually and submitted in digital format. Our team of archivists appraised submissions and worked with our Digital Archivist and student employees to ingest files into the University Libraries’ digital archive.
